Kizhi — Heated Herbal Poultice Massage

Medicinal leaves and powders are bundled into cotton poultices, heated in oil, and stamped rhythmically over the body. The combination of herb, oil and heat penetrates deeper than hands alone, which is why Kizhi is the classical Kerala answer to stiff joints, old injuries and cold-weather aches.

Step by step

What happens during Kizhi Herbal Poultice Massage

No surprises. This is the exact sequence, in order.

  1. Step 01

    Poultice preparation

Nirgundi, eranda leaves or Kottamchukkadi powder are tied fresh and warmed in medicated oil.

  2. Step 02

    Oil priming

A short Abhyanga opens the area so the poultice heat travels rather than sitting on the surface.

  3. Step 03

    Rhythmic stamping

Two poultices work in alternation, kept at a constant temperature throughout.

  4. Step 04

    Wrap and rest

The treated joints are wrapped warm for ten minutes to hold the effect.

Oils we use

Kottamchukkadi, Dhanwantharam or Murivenna depending on whether pain is inflammatory or degenerative.

Aftercare

Keep the area covered and warm for the rest of the day. Avoid cold showers and air conditioning; a course of five to seven sessions produces far more than one.

Questions

Kizhi Herbal Poultice Massage — what people ask

What is the difference between Elakizhi and Podikizhi?

Elakizhi uses fresh medicinal leaves and suits inflammatory, painful joints. Podikizhi uses herbal powders and suits heavy, stiff, degenerative conditions. Your therapist selects after assessment.

Is Kizhi good for arthritis?

It is one of the most commonly prescribed Ayurvedic therapies for osteoarthritis and stiffness. It manages symptoms and mobility — it is complementary care, not a cure, and we say so plainly.

Is the poultice too hot?

Temperature is tested on the therapist's own wrist before every contact, and adjusted to what your skin tolerates.
