Shirodhara — Continuous Warm Oil Therapy

A steady thread of warm medicated oil is poured across the forehead for 30 to 45 unbroken minutes. The rhythm entrains brainwaves toward a theta state — the same range reached in deep meditation. Guests routinely describe it as the most profound rest they have had in years, and it is our most requested treatment after a long-haul flight or a hard trek.

Step by step

What happens during Shirodhara

No surprises. This is the exact sequence, in order.

  1. Step 01

    Head and shoulder release

Ten minutes of shiro-abhyanga clears the neck before the oil flow begins.

  2. Step 02

    The dhara

Oil at 38–40°C flows from the traditional brass vessel in a figure-of-eight across the forehead.

  3. Step 03

    Silence

No talking, no phone. The room is kept dark and warm throughout.

  4. Step 04

    Gradual return

You are left to rest for 10 minutes before a warm towel wrap and herbal tea.

Oils we use

Ksheerabala 101, brahmi or chandanadi taila, warmed and re-filtered for each guest.

Aftercare

Avoid screens and cold wind for two hours. Wrap your head if you go outside. Do not plan anything demanding afterwards — this is a treatment to end the day with.

Questions

Shirodhara — what people ask

Is Shirodhara good for insomnia?

It is the classical Ayurvedic answer to insomnia driven by an overactive mind. Most guests report a change in sleep quality after one session, and a course of five to seven sessions for a chronic pattern.

Will the oil ruin my hair?

No. It is a herbal hair treatment in itself. We wash it out with chickpea-flour cleanser at the end if you have plans afterwards, though leaving it overnight gives the best result.

How many Shirodhara sessions do I need?

One for the experience and immediate relief; five to seven consecutive days for chronic insomnia, anxiety or migraine, ideally alongside Abhyanga.
